MEMORY LEARNING
We have already looked at the different stages of memory
formation (from perception to sensory memory to short-term memory to long -term
memory) in the section on types of memory. This section, however, looks at the
overall processes involved. Memory is the ablility to encode, store and recall
information. The three main processes involved in human memory are therefore
encoding,storage and recall(retrieval). Additionally,the process of memory
consolidation (which can be either part of the encoding process or the storageprocess)
is treated here as a separate process in its own right. Some of the physiology
and neurology involved in these processes is highly complex and technical (and
some of it still not completely understood),and lies largely outside the remit
of this entry level guide, although at least a general introduction is given
here.More information on the architecture of the human brain, and the
neurological processes by which memory is encoded, stored and recalled can be
found in the section on memory and the brain.
MEMORY STRATEGIES
• HELPS
STUDENTS IN THEIR ENCODING,STORING ANDRETRIEVING THE INFORMATION (HELP TO
REMEMBER AND RECALL)
• REMEMBERING
IS HARD WORK,AND MEMORY TECHNIQUE DO NOT NECESSARILY MAKE IT EASY,THEY JUST
MAKE IT MORE EFFECTIVE
Memory strategies #1
Massed practice Vs
Spaced Practice
• Massed
practice (not good) is comprised of training or learning sessions that are long
and intense as opposed to distributed practice which uses shorter and less
intense sessions to impart information to a student or trainee.Massed practice
has been shown through research to be ultimately less successful than the
distributed practice model.
• Spaced
practice(good,recommended)-involves space time over some period of time for
studying.spaced practice allow you
Memory strategies #2
Break reading materialdown (again no cramming) for some
period of time.E.g. revise 2 chapters per day, not all chapters a day before
the exam.
Memory strategies #3
Repeat the information many times. E.g.repeat a telephone
number 10 times.
Memory strategies #4
• MNEMONICS
(Memory Tricks)
• A tool to
help remember facts or a large amount of information.
• It can be
a song, rhyme,or a phrase to help remember a list of facts in a certain order
Memory strategies #5
TALENT
YOU HAVE NATURALLY. SKILL IS ONLY DEVELOPED BY HOURS AND HOUR AND HOURS OF
BEATING ON YOUR CRAFT.
